There are so many ways to save energy that we decided to list some to help homeowners cut down on their energy consumption this year. If you want to save energy, you have to change more than a few things around your home...you need to change your mentality. Appliances should not be left on standby mode and using the economic mode of washing machines and dishwashers also help in saving energy.

I need to figure out how to conserve some energy in my house. The electric bill has been skyrocketing. Is there anything I can do or use that will help me save electricity and money?

Yes, there is lots you can do to conserve electricity. One of the most common things is that when you plug something into the wall, it drains energy non-stop, even when there is nothing plugged in on the other end. Another power-hog is the thermostat and air conditioner. The air conditioner should not be set below 76, and the thermostat should not be set above 71 degrees. Another energy-eater is appliances that are on, but they are not in use.
Here is a list of common things that are left on:
- Computers - Large energy drain, should be put in sleep mode
- Lamps - Average energy drain, should be replaced with florecent bulbs, and should be turned off when not in use.
- TVs - Average energy drain, should still be turned off
These are just a few simple ways to lower your electric bill.

P.S. - If you really want to get drastic when cutting down your electric bill, you could convert to home solar power.

I always put my PC into sleep mode when I'm not using it. I also not watching TV too much, I read books :)

It's also helpful to not use the clothes dryer as much. I have found that air drying most all of my clothes not only saves a bunch in energy costs but also saves my clothes for much longer wear. The heat of the dryer is really damaging to fibers.
If you're a coffee drinker, turn off the coffee maker as soon as the coffee is brewed. The heat element eats a lot of energy and scorches the coffee so it doesn't taste as good. Put the freshly brewed coffee in a thermos to keep it hot and tasting great.

Using warm water to wash clothes rather than hot. Clothes are just as clean, but more electricity is used when heating hot water. Stay Green ^^
