View Full Version : Is the Recent Oil Spill Even More Reason For Renewable Energy?

The Deepwater Gulf of Mexico oil spill of 2010 is rapidly moving towards the status of the worst accident in U.S. history, and as the disaster moves into its third week a lot of questions are still unanswered, the most obvious being, when is this thing going to stop spewing?
So as Republicans speculate on response times and British Petroleum and the Federal Government point fingers the oil continues to spill and questions about safety regulations in regards to offshore drilling begin to arise. But one has to ask, has this happened in the past?

This thing really is a clusterf**k. It's basically the oil industry's equivalent of a nuclear meltdown! My view of how the conversations go...
"Hey look, cheap energy!"
"What about the risks if something goes horribly wrong?"
"Ah, that'll never happen"
Guess what? It happened! I really hope this disaster puts a stop to the recent bill that was passed that was supposed to allow for more offshore drilling. I'm not saying we need to only power the country with energy supplies that have ZERO risk...that's a little unrealistic...but sheesh, how about something a little less completely damaging to the earth, the ecosystem, wildlife habits, our food supply, etc.
Oh, and I'm sick of this whole corporate finger-pointing blame game. BP, Halliburton, whoever else may or may not be involved: Fix the damn thing now; figure out who pays the bill later on your own time.

Scientists are examining samples from seven dolphins and over 100 sea turtles found dead along the U.S. Gulf Coast in the past two weeks to see if they were victims of the giant oil spill in the region, wildlife officials said on Thursday.
All of the deaths are being investigated as suspected casualties of the oil gushing unchecked since April 20 from a ruptured wellhead on the floor of the Gulf off Louisiana because of their proximity in time and space to the spill.

It seems to me that a massive oil well not leaking but spewing out oil for over a month, may have something to do with dead dolphins washing up.

I believe that the recent oil spill should be a big wake up call to everyone, but people just don't care. I think in Canada they should have those horizontal wind generators developed in Chicago on every building over 20ft. high.

I had a friend of mine that went down to new orleans to help out with the clean up. He said there wasn't any cleaning going on, it was just making the oil sink to the bottom. I think there was something like 2 feet of oil sitting on the bottom where he was. Crazy.
