Ford Motor Company has a gas/electric vehicle that runs 40 miles on the battery. They said in thier articles eliminating the transmission increases efficiency around 15 percent. My idea is:

Run a small 3 cylinder diesal engine to operate a generator. These would have a computer controlled in wheel electric motor design which would act as the braking system, accelleration, and traction control for all four wheels.

This would true 4 wheel drive and would eliminate all the gearing and transfer cases involved with mechanically linking all the wheels to the engine since they are operated electronically.

A modern diesal engine can attain 60 mpg or more to the gallon. If add 15 percent and keep in mind that we can shrink the size of the engine also maybe we can have a compact four door vehicle making around 75 mpg.

Diesal electric has been used with great efficiency in trains for many years, I think we can persaude lawmakers to pressure or pass a law regarding this type of engine configuration. All said, we can prevent millions and millions of barrels of oil from being combusted which helps air pollution and our footprint.

How do I get a grassroots effort started in this regard?

I think this is a good interim step until we have a breakthrough on battery technology that people can afford. Any comments would be appreciated.
