I want to re-use my dish and bathwater for my plants. By washing my dishes in a large bowl I've realized I use up quite a bit of water doing it and if only I could use that water on my plants I'd be saving a lot of money AND water.

But I am worried about the soap for dishes and my bath and the impact it will have on my plants. In the mean time I am washing as many dishes as possible without soap- but obviously I need soap for my baths and the rest of my family wants soap for their dishes and I certainly understand.

I know there are ecologically green soaps available and I have used those but I'm not really certain they'll be safe for my plants.

They're also very expensive and I don't have a lot of money to spend. I would be happy to make a dish soap at home though I don't know if the recipes I've found online will be safe for my plants.

Any suggestions? Thankyou so much. =)

I don't know much about the effects of ecologically green soaps on plants. But if you're wanting to save water on plant irrigation, one of the simplest methods is to use a rain barrel. Whether you buy one in the store or make one yourself, it is a simple concept to capture unused rainwater and save it for later.

Also, do you have a dishwasher? I think dishwashers are supposed to be far more efficient with their use of water than hand-washing alone.

As for reusing graywater from baths and showers, I think it's a fantastic way to save water (and will get you a LEED point :)), but it'll be expensive as you'll need to rework plumbing and provide a storage tank.
